(No. 261) No Fish at Maruiwa in Owashi (大芦の丸岩にて釣果なし)

I may become too busy to go fishing very often for the next two or three weeks because I am going to receive some visitors from abroad. I want to go fishing as often as possible now before I get busy. So I drove to Maruiwa in Owashi immediately after submitting my translation assignment early in the morning. I started casting my lures from vacant Maruiwa about 7 a.m. The sea was calm, and the water was clear. No baitfish was sighted. While dreaming that some stray fish would hit my lures, I kept casting my favorites in vain. I finished it about 8:30 a.m. One bait fisherman whom I had seen before at the spot had arrived later than I. He was fishing for Japanese black porgy, and he told me how to catch the fish. Even if you don’t catch any fish, just having a good conversation at a gorgeous fishing spot is worthwhile.

（これからの２、３週間は忙しくなってしまい、頻繁には釣りに行けなくなるかもしれません。外国からのお客様をお迎えするのです。忙しくなる前になるべくたくさん釣りに行こうと考えている私は、早朝、翻訳の仕事を提出し終わるやいなや、大芦の丸岩へ車を走らせました。無人の丸岩に立ってルアーを投げ始めたのは、午前７時頃でした。海は穏やかで、澄んでいます。ベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）の姿はありません。群れからはぐれた魚がルアーを襲うのではないかと夢想しつつ、私は無駄にルアーを投げ続けました。釣りを終えたのは、午前８時30分頃でした。以前、同じ場所でお会いしたことのあるエサ釣り師が、私の後からやって来られていました。チヌ（黒鯛）を狙われているその男性は、私にチヌの釣り方を教えてくださるのでした。たとえ魚は釣れなくても、素敵な釣り場で楽しい会話ができるだけで、十分な価値があるのです。）

(No. 260) No Fish at Kobanare next to Ohtoko-bana (大床鼻の隣の小ばなれにて釣果なし)

I did not go to Ohtoko-bana this winter due to the kind of mysterious sign posted at the parking space overlooking it. The sign says, “Keep out the island: you are not allowed to get into the island from December to February.” So I had decided to wait for March, and since then I had almost forgotten about Ohtoko-bana, but today I realized it was already the end of March and I missed the grand fishing spot in Izumo City.

（私はこの冬、大床鼻に行くことはありませんでした。大床鼻を見下ろす駐車スペースに、ちょっと不思議な看板が立てられたのです。看板には「入島禁止：12月〜２月までは島に入らないでください」と書いてありました。私は３月まで待つことに決め、それ以来、大床鼻のことはほとんど忘れていたのです。しかし本日、既に３月の末になっているばかりか、出雲市のあの壮大な釣り場を懐かしく感じている自分に気づいたのです。）

I had to do some household chores this morning, so I could not start fishing earlier than 9:30 a.m. When I arrived at Ohtoko-bana, I found three bait fishermen already occupied the spot. I passed by Ohtoko-bana and moved to Kobanare, another fishing spot to the east of Ohtoko-bana. The water was very clear. It was as if you were able to see the bottom of the sea in the distance. However, there was no baitfish around. I stopped casting my lures before 11 a.m. Although there was no catch today, I remembered that I loved the spot.

（今朝はちょっとした家事をする必要があったため、釣りを開始できたのは午前９時30分くらいからでした。到着してみると、大床鼻は３人のエサ釣り師によって既に満員です。そこで私は大床鼻を通り過ぎ、その東にある別の釣り場、小ばなれへ移動しました。海はとても澄んでいました。まるで遠くの海底まで目にすることができるかのようでした。しかしながらベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）の姿はありません。私は11時になる前に釣りを終えました。今日は魚を釣ることはできませんでしたが、私は、この釣り場が大好きであることを思い出したのでした。）

(No. 259) No Fish at Koidori-bana in Owashi (大芦の越鳥鼻にて釣果なし)

I wanted to go to Oshima in Koura for the first time in one year and a half, but the road to the magnificent but treacherous fishing spot seemed blocked due to the ongoing construction of seemingly more convenient another road. Instead, I went to Koidori-bana in Owashi. To my surprise, there was no fisherman on Niregi-no-hato in Owashi Harbor. Why there was no one on Saturday? Was it a bad sign for fishing? Probably so, but I took the path through the bamboo thicket toward Koidori-bana. About 8 a.m. I started casting my favorite lures toward the very calm sea, and I stopped it before 10 a.m. There was still no fisherman on Niregi-no-hato when I came back to my car.

（一年半ぶりに古浦の男島に行きたかったのですが、雄大かつ危険なこの釣り場へ至る道路が、工事のために封鎖されているようなのでした。見たところ、より便利な別の道路が作られているようです。代わりに私は、大芦の越鳥鼻へ行きました。驚いたことに、大芦港の楡木の波止に、釣り人の姿がありません。土曜日なのに誰もいない？　釣りには悪い兆しなのだろうか？　おそらくそうなのでしょうが、私は、竹林の中の小道を歩いて越鳥鼻に向かいました。午前８時頃から、とても穏やかな海めがけてお気に入りのルアーを投げ始め、10時になる前に終了しました。車のところまで戻った時、楡木の波止には、まだ釣り人の姿がありませんでした。）

(No. 258) No Fish at Seizya and Ohyokote next to Ketakake Peninsula (桁掛半島の隣にある「せいじゃ」と大横手にて釣果なし)

I have been to the Ketakake Peninsula or even farther fishing spots four times in a short period of time since March 4. Those are among the most distant fishing spots in the Shimane Peninsula from my place. It takes about one hour to go to Uryu Harbor in Taisha by car, and it takes another 30 to 50 minutes to trek to the Ketakake Peninsula or Ohyokote, one of the farther spots to the east of peninsula. Why do I keep doing this? Obviously I love the wonderful scenery. I also would like to listen to NPR Music's Austin 100 in my car. 

（３月４日以降の短期間において、桁掛半島もしくは桁掛半島よりさらに遠い釣り場へ、私は４回も出かけています。それらは、島根半島にある釣り場のうち、我が家から最も遠い釣り場に属します。まず、大社の宇竜港へ行くのに車で約１時間かかりますし、そこから、桁掛半島、あるいはさらに遠く、半島の東に位置する大横手などに行くには、山道を30分から50分歩かねばなりません。なぜ私は、そんなことをし続けるのでしょうか？　当然ながら、同地の景色が大好きだからです。そしてまた、車の中で、NPRミュージックの「The Austin 100」を聴きたいからでもあります。）

National Public Radio (NPR) in the U.S. compiled the Austin 100 for the SXSW (South by Southwest) Music Festival in 2017. As I mentioned about a year ago, the staff of NPR listens to a lot of new artists that will play for the annual SXSW and selects best 100 songs each year. All the songs are downloadable for free by the end of March. I love listening to music in my car, and in order to enjoy as many good songs as possible, I have to drive as long as possible. That is another reason why I keep going to the Ketakake Peninsula even when I keep getting skunked.

（米国のナショナル・パブリック・ラジオ（NPR）が今年も、SXSW（サウス・バイ・サウスウェスト）音楽祭のために「The Austin 100」を編んでいます。約１年前にもお知らせしましたが、NPRのスタッフは毎年、その年のSXSWに出演するたくさんの新しいアーティストたちを聴いて、最高の100曲を選ぶのです。そして３月末までなら、それら全曲が無料でダウンロード可能です。私は運転しながら音楽を聴くのが好きなのですが、良い曲をたくさん楽しむには、なるべく長時間、車を運転しなければなりません。それこそが、たとえ魚が釣れなくても桁掛半島に通い続ける理由の一つなのです。）

(No. 257) No Fish at Maruiwa in Owashi (大芦の丸岩にて釣果なし)

This morning I started fishing at Maruiwa in Owashi about 7:30 a.m. and finished it about 9 a.m. without trying another fishing spot. The sea was very calm and therefore there was neither a nice patch of sarashi (white churning water) nor sign of baitfish. It was just another beautiful morning that could not be very good for fishing.

（今朝は大芦にある丸岩で、午前７時30分から釣り始め、他の釣り場を試すことなく、午前９時に納竿しました。海は穏やかで、そのため、良さそうなサラシ（かき混ぜられた白い水）もなければ、ベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）の気配もありませんでした。例によって、釣りにはあまり良くない美しい朝の一つだったのです。）

(No. 256) Japanese Spanish Mackerel at Ohyokote next to Ketakake Peninsula (桁掛半島の隣にある大横手にてサワラ)

When I walked in the woods on my way to the Ketakake Peninsula early in the morning, I changed my mind and decided to try Ohyokote for the first time. Ohyokote is a fishing spot that is farther than the peninsula. As is often the case with me, I got lost in the woods almost immediately after I took the path to Ohyokote. After wasting 20 minutes, I managed to get to the vacant fishing spot. I started casting my lures about 8:30 a.m., but there was no baitfish around and the stagnant water was even calmer than yesterday. Brown seaweeds floated without moving an inch. A balmy spring sun soon made me sleepy, and the quietness of the sea made me take a nap. I woke up at 11:30 a.m. to find the seaweeds were completely gone and a small school of baitfish was swimming along the shore. With my second or third cast of a Deadly Dick, I saw a silvery fish ferociously attack the lure. It was a beautiful Japanese Spanish mackerel of about 65 cm (26 in.) long.

（早朝、桁掛半島へ向かうため森の中を歩いていた私は気が変わり、大横手へ初めて行ってみることにしました。大横手は、桁掛半島よりも、さらに遠くにある釣り場です。私にはありがちなことなのですが、大横手へ続く小道に入ってほとんどすぐに、道に迷ってしまいました。無人の釣り場に到着したのは、20分間を無駄に費やした後のことでした。午前８時30分頃からルアーを投げ始めましたが、ベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）の姿はありませんし、流れの悪い海は、昨日よりもさらに穏やかです。茶色い海草が、微動だにせぬまま、浮かんでいます。うららかな春の日差しのせいで私は間もなく眠くなり、静かな海のせいで私は居眠りをしてしまいました。午前11時30分に目覚めると、海草は完全に姿を消しており、ベイトフィッシュの小さな群が岸際を泳いでいます。デッドリー・ディックの２投目か３投目、銀色の魚が荒々しくルアーに襲いかかるのが見えました。それは、約65センチの、美しいサワラでした。）

(No. 255) No Fish around Ohbira and Ji-no-kujira in Ketakake Peninsula (桁掛半島の「大びら」及び「地の鯨」周辺にて釣果なし)

Some birds started hovering above the water when I arrived at Ohbira, one of the fishing spots in the Ketakake Peninsula in Izumo City. It was about 8:30 a.m. When I had been at the same spot a week ago, I had not seen anything like that. I thought some substantial changes might have happened in the water in a week since then. However, the area over which the birds were hovering was way beyond the reach of my lures. Nevertheless, I kept casting some of my heaviest metal jigs to reach the birds, but soon they were gone. I decided to forget unreliable and frustrating birds. Instead, I cast my lures along the rocky shore in anticipation of catching Japanese sea bass. Unfortunately, the sea seemed too calm for the fish to be active. While casting some of my favorite lures such as a darter and a huge spinner, I waked to Ji-no-kujira. I did neither catch any fish nor see any fisherman, and I was completely alone in the bleak and desolate peninsula, but somehow I did not dislike it.

（出雲市の桁掛半島にある釣り場の一つ、「大びら」に到着すると、数羽の鳥が海上を旋回し始めました。午前８時30分頃のことでした。一週間前に同じ場所にいた時には、そんなことは起きなかったのです。この一週間の間に、何か重要な変化が水中で生じたのかもしれないと、私は考えました。しかし、鳥たちが旋回している場所は、私のルアーが届く範囲を大きく超えているのでした。それでも私は、鳥たちに届けとばかり、いちばん重たいメタルジグを投げ続けました。間もなく、鳥たちは消えてしまいました。当てにならず、イライラさせられる鳥のことは忘れることにしました。代わりに、スズキでも釣れやしないかと思い、磯際に沿ってルアーを投げてみました。残念ながら、今日の海は穏やかすぎてスズキの活性は上がらないようです。ダーターや巨大スピナーなどお気に入りのルアーを投げながら「地の鯨」まで歩きました。魚も釣れなければ、他の釣り人に遭遇もしません。私は、荒涼とした半島に完全に一人きりだったのですが、どういうわけか、それが嫌いではないのでした。）

(No. 254) No Fish at Oki-hato in Katsurajima, Kaka (加賀の桂島にある沖波止にて釣果なし)

I have tested my two handmade fiberglass rods at various spots. This morning I went to Oki-hato, the breakwater at Katsurajima in Kaka. I had been to Katsurajima, a small island that lies on the west of Kaka Harbor, but had not fished from Oki-hato. Using my shorter fiberglass rod of 8.6 feet long with a PENN Torque 9 spinning reel, I mainly cast my Dreamcatcher "standard,” one of huge spinners that I had bought in Stockholm last year. I instantly felt the combination clicked. I also felt that it might be suited for boat fishing. I have not done boat fishing for about 20 years. I am basically a surf fisherman and I don’t care much about boat fishing tackle, but I remembered that one of my old classmates had asked me to help him start in fishing guide business with a boat. Although I had almost no experience in modern boat fishing, I felt the combination with the shorter fiberglass rod and the biggest Torque spinning reel would be suitable.

（手作りのグラスファイバー・ロッド２本を、いろいろな場所に持っていって、テストしています。今朝は、加賀の桂島にある防波堤、沖波止へ行きました。加賀港の西に位置するこの小さな島に以前行ったことはありますが、沖波止から釣るのは初めてです。２本のうちの短い方、長さが8.6フィートの竿にPENNのトルク９・スピニングリールを付けて、私は主に、ドリームキャッチャー“スタンダード”を投げました。去年、ストックホルムで購入した巨大スピナーの一つです。これが、しっくり来る組み合わせであることに、すぐに気づきました。同時に私は、これはボートからの釣りにも適した組み合わせではないかと思いました。私は20年以上、ボート釣りをしていません。私は基本的に陸からの釣りが好きであって、ボート釣り用のタックルに関心はないのですが、元同級生の一人が以前、ボートを使った釣りガイドの仕事をそのうち始めるので、その立ち上げを手伝ってほしいと言っていたことを思い出しました。現代のボート釣りについて経験はほぼ皆無の私ですが、短いグラス竿といちばん大きなトルクという組み合わせは、ボートからの釣りにぴったりではないかと思いました。）

(No. 253) No Fish around Ohbira and Ji-no-kujira in Ketakake Peninsula (桁掛半島の「大びら」及び「地の鯨」周辺にて釣果なし)

It was such a beautiful day today. Finally the spring seemed to have come. Shun-san, a fishing buddy of mine and a reliable source of information, commented in my previous post to inform there was no baitfish along the shore of Hirata. So it was unlikely that I would catch fish today, but the wonderful weather enticed me to go for a long drive to Uryu Harbor to get to the Ketakake Peninsula. I left my car at the harbor and started trekking up and down through the mountain. About 30 minutes later, I reached Ohbira, one of the fishing spots in the peninsula. Whenever I visit the peninsula, the sight awes me. Unfortunately the sea was too calm today, and indeed there was no baitfish. After making several casts at Ohbira in vain, I walked to Ji-no-kujira, but the result remained the same. I did not catch fish today, but the trekking to the peninsula and being part of the gorgeous sight was truly rewarding as usual.

（今日はとても良い天気でした。どうやら、ついに春が来たようです。釣り友達の一人であり、信頼に足る情報源でもあるShunさんが、前回の投稿にコメントしてくださったのですが、それによると、平田の海岸にはベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）の姿がないそうです。つまり今日、私に魚が釣れる可能性は低いわけですが、素晴らしい天気に誘われた私は、宇竜港まで長いドライブをし、桁掛半島へ向かいました。港で車を降りると、山道の登り降りの開始です。約30分後、半島内の釣り場の一つである「大びら」に到着しました。この半島に来るといつも、その風景に畏敬の念を抱きます。あいにく今日の海は穏やか過ぎましたし、ベイトフィッシュの姿も確かにありませんでした。「大びら」で成果なく数キャストした私は、「地の鯨」へ移動しましたが、釣果に変化はありません。魚は釣れない日でしたが、半島までの山道を歩き、その豪快な風景の一部となるだけで、いつもと同様、本当に報われた気分になるのです。）
