After living in the United States for 15 years, I came back to my hometown Matsue, a small city in the western part of Japan, in November 2014. I imposed a simple rule on myself. Use only American saltwater lures for at least one year and report what they catch...... When a year had passed since then, I decided not to lift this ridiculous restriction.

(No. 98) No Fish at Uppurui-bana

Today is October 31, which means today is the last day when you are allowed to fish at Uppurui-bana this year. Uppurui in Izumo City is famous for its delicious seaweed, Uppurui Nori. The nori grows on rocky shores in the winter, and local licensed residents pick it up manually. That's why some shores including Uppurui-bana become off-limits to the general public from November 1 to March 31. Today I started fishing at the spot called Ohbira in Uppurui-bana about 6:30 a.m. Then I saw unusual number of fishermen keep coming, but nobody caught any big fish whether with lures or bait. Whoever talked to me said, "Not good today.”
I kept moving around in Uppurui-bana. I moved to the tip of Nakabasan (a bit scary because of the rough sea), then moved back to Ohbira, then moved to Nishigaiwa as I kept casting lures tenaciously until about 11 a.m. Finally, I drove to Uppurui Harbor. I tried from its biggest breakwater for a while. It was already afternoon. I was tired and did not feel I would catch fish. If it had been a normal day I would have already been on my way home, but today is a special day, so I had lunch and took a rest in nearby town Hirata. I soaked in a hot spring in Yurari, a public bath in Hirata. In my humble opinion, it is one of the best hot springs in Japan. Revived by it, I came back to Uppurui-bana at 4 p.m. and kept casting until sunset. There were some new fishermen, and whoever talked with me said, "Not good today.” I had to agree with them.

(No. 97) Consecutively No Fish at Kurauchi Bay

I was so impressed with the white churning water in Kurauchi Bay yesterday that I visited the bay again this afternoon. The water looked the same as yesterday. This kind of white churning water is called sarashi in Japanese. Today I was alone there. Standing on the spot where another fisherman was standing yesterday, I started fishing about 4 p.m. Then, I gradually moved eastward and finally got to the spot called Kawashimo according to the useful “Sanin Fishing Spot Guidebook.” I didn’t catch any fish, and I didn’t like to go all the way back. So I climbed up bushy slope forcefully to the road in the mountain, which leads to my car.

(No. 96) No Fish at Kurauchi Bay

It was so windy today that I was sure the sea was rough. Usually I don’t go fishing with this strong wind, but this morning I managed to finish one tough job and I felt like congratulating myself. So I drove to Etomo Harbor this evening. Just as I feared, the wind was strong and the waves were high. Some spots from which you can narrowly cast lures were occupied. I drove to Tayu, a small and beautiful harbor to the east of Etomo, but no spot was available. Then, I drove to Kurauchi Bay between Tayu and Kataku. There was one fisherman on the tip of a rock. Avoiding the high waves, he was casting lures. I walked down to another rock. The sea was very rough. I thought maybe I would catch a nice Japanese sea bass because they like white churning water like that. I fished for about one hour until sunset, but I didn’t catch any fish.

(No. 95) No Fish at Nanbo in Etomo Harbor

The weather forecast said the height of waves this weekend would be about 2.5 meter. It also said the waves would come with swells. It would be dangerous to fish standing on a rocky area that directly faces the current of ocean, such as Ohtoko-bana. In addition, due to my work schedule, I had no choice but to go to only a nearby spot. So I went to Koura Public Beach and Etomo Harbor before sunset this Saturday and Sunday. I spent most of my time in casting lures from Nanbo, one of the breakwaters of the harbor. There were a few lure fishermen as well as some bait fishermen on Nanbo on both days, but I didn’t see any lure fishermen catching fish except one guy who caught a small fish that looked a barracuda.

(No. 94) One Small Bite at Ohtoko-bana

I have not gone to Ohtoko-bana in Izumi City since I found more convenient fishing spots in the vicinity, such as Ichinose. It takes around 20 minutes to walk down to Ohtoko-bana from a small parking space on the hillside. You have to walk along the path on the slope and climb down the rocky valley to the wild fishing spot. When driving toward Ichinose this morning, I got a sudden change of heart and turned to my left toward Ohtoko-bana. Unexpectedly I was the first person to arrive at the spot. I started fishing shortly after sunrise. I didn’t see any action for a while. Neither baitfish nor birds were spotted.
But around 7 a.m. something bit my Super Strike Little Neck Popper. Although it was a small bite and probably the fish was not very big, I got pumped up. Unfortunately nothing followed. Before 9 a.m. one bait fisherman came to the spot. He said he had kept coming here to catch striped beakfish. The record of the fish in Japan (84.5 cm) was established here in 2010. That is another reason why Ohtoko-bana is famous. After enjoying the chat with this talkative and friendly fisherman, I left the spot all to himself.

(No. 93) No Fish at Koura Public Beach and Nanbo in Etomo Harbor

The weather was so beautiful today that I went to Koura Public Beach before noon. It was already late October and I was not sure I would swim today, but everything looked so summery at the sandy beach that as soon as I saw the beautiful water I realized I would swim sooner or later. First I went to the rocky area next to the beach to fish. Soon one of my favorite lures was stuck at a rock in the shallow water.
I could see the lure through the water but couldn't retrieve it. I had to swim toward the rock. I successfully saved the lure, Super Strike Zig Zag, but I failed to catch fish. I found consolation in swimming at the beach. Then I moved to the tip of Nanbo, one of the breakwaters in Etomo Harbor. It was still around 1 p.m. So I didn't feel I would catch any fish soon. As I cast lures sporadically, I took a nap, read a book (Thomas Pynchon’s Mason & Dixon), and started writing this post with my iPhone 4S. Finally the evening came and I kept casting lures until sunset, but in vain.

(No. 92) Longtooth Grouper at Nanbo in Etomo Harbor

I have worked so hard this weekend that I felt I needed a short break this afternoon. So I went to Etomo Harbor this evening. Before casting my lures, I found an empty beverage can left on Nanbo, one of the breakwaters in the harbor. Of course I picked up the can. Then, I started casting my lures from the tip of the breakwater. I saw some small predatory fish chasing baitfish on the surface. They seemed young Japanese sea bass. One young lure fisherman who came later and kept casting a small vibration plug caught one of them just before sunset.
I didn’t have any small plugs. Instead, I took out a Northbar Bottledarter, whose size is 18 cm in length and 2.5 oz. in weight. It is almost as big as the young Japanese sea bass. Just at sunset, when I was about to give up fishing, I hooked something. It pulled hard. I thought it was a medium-sized Japanese sea bass, but actually it was a longtooth grouper of 42 cm (17 in.). Do you remember my “Those who pick up the litter will be rewarded” theory, which I explained in my past posts No. 85 and 86? Well, this evening the theory seemed to prove right again.

(No. 91) No Fish at Ichinose in Koizu and around Mitsu Harbor

Today I was the first to arrive at Ichinose in Koizu, Izumo City. I started fishing when it was getting light before 6 a.m. Then, one lure fisherman and a few bait fishermen came to the spot. I stayed there until about 7 a.m. and it seemed nobody caught any fish. After chatting two other fishermen briefly, I left the spot and drove toward Mitsu Harbor. Leaving my car where the paved road ends, I walked to Setokaze-bana, where I had gotten a strong bite last time, but this time there was neither bite nor fish.
I walked to Nakanoshima, where the following strong wind was slightly sideways, so that I had trouble in controlling my line to keep it from touching an isolated rock to my right. I walked back to Setokaze-bana. No fish again. I drove to Takase, a big rock at the east end of Mitsu Harbor. No fish here, either. It was almost 9 a.m. when I drove back to Ichinose. Then I kept casting my lures tenaciously for 30 minutes. Just when I finally gave up and decided to go home, I saw a boil over which a few seagulls were hovering. The boil disappeared instantly, but it extended my stay for 10 minutes in vain.

(No. 90) No Fish at Sanami Harbor

Although it rained on and off today, I went to Sanami Harbor this evening and fished for 2 hours before sunset. When I come to the place, it is usually for going to Taka-hana or Sakitaka-hana over the harbor. If you want to catch stronger fish such as a yellowtail amberjack or a red sea bream, you should go to those spots where the water is deeper and the current can be stronger. That’s what the “Sanin Fishing Spot Guidebook” says. This useful guidebook also says you can catch Japanese sea bass inside the harbor if the ocean is stormy and there is a rain. Today it rained and the sea was choppy. It might not have been stormy but at least it was not calm. So I hoped I might catch the fish, but I didn’t. I will wait for another storm.

(No. 89) No Fish at Ichinose in Koizu

We arrived at Ichinose in Koizu, Izumo City, about 5 a.m. I was with a friend of mine, who had introduced me to fishing in Sakaiminato City this year. Today I introduced him to Ichinose. It was still very dark when we arrived, but we could tell even from the parking space that the swell was strong and the waves swept across the rocks sporadically. We came closer to the edge of rocks and waited for dawn. There was one lure fisherman before us, who did the same as we did. When it was getting light, we started casting our lures while keeping an eye on the swell and waves. The friend of mine got a faint bite. It was probably a Japanese Spanish mackerel because he found a tooth mark on the lure. A bait fisherman who came later caught a yellowtail amberjack, and another lure fisherman caught a Japanese Spanish mackerel, but we didn’t catch any fish. We quit about 8:30 a.m. because the swell got even stronger. Of course, we vowed to take revenge.

(No. 88) Strong Bite around Mitsu Harbor

Before 6 a.m. I passed by Mitsu Harbor in Izumo City to start fishing at the spot called Setokaze-bana. As soon as I started casting my Hopkins No=Eql against the wind, I felt a bite. It was such a strong but brief tug that I was almost stunned. Unfortunately the fish (or some powerful creature) was not hooked. Soon the head wing got unbearably strong, so I walked westward to another spot called Nakanoshima. There was one pair of lure fishermen nearby, but it was only 7:30 a.m. when they quit fishing and went back. They might have concluded no fish would be caught today. I stayed a bit longer but in vain. Thinking that the pair must have been a regular here, I went back to my car, too. Then, I drove to the spot called Takase, a big rock at the east end of Mitsu Harbor. Hoping I would feel another strong bite, I kept casting until 9:30 a.m. but nothing happened.
