(No. 149) No Fish at Sanami Harbor (佐波港にて釣果なし)

Last night I saw several lure fishermen around a few bridges over the Ohashi River, which connects Lake Nakaumi with Lake Shinji. They said Japanese sea bass started being caught with lures in the river. I was slightly tempted to go to the river, but instead I went to Sanami Harbor this evening. According to the very useful “Sanin Fishing Spot Guidebook,” you can catch Japanese sea bass inside the bay when the sea outside the harbor is rough and muddy rainwater flows into the bay. I had wanted to try it since I read the description, and this evening fitted the bill. The rain already stopped when I arrived at the spot about 6 p.m., but heavy rain had kept falling until about 4 p.m. The water inside the harbor looked very muddy. It might have been a bit too muddy because unfortunately no fish hit my lures.

（中海と宍道湖を結ぶ大橋川にかかる幾つかの橋のそばに、昨夜、数人の釣り人の姿がありました。話を聞くと、大橋川でスズキが釣れ出したそうです。私は大橋川での釣りに少し惹かれたものの、今夕は佐波港へと向かいました。とても役立つ『山陰の釣り場総覧』によると、外海の時化（しけ）た時、そして濁った雨水が湾に注ぎ込む時、佐波港内でスズキがよく釣れるのだそうです。その記述を読んで以来、私はずっと試してみたいと思っており、今夕はその条件にピッタリ合ったのでした。雨は、釣り場に到着した午後６時には既に上がっていましたが、午後４時頃まで激しく降り続いていました。湾内はとても濁っています。でも、ちょっと濁り過ぎだったのかもしれません。残念ながら、どんな魚もヒットしなかったのですから。）
