(No. 185) Missed Big Japanese Sea Bass at Ikesu in Etomo (恵曇の生須にて大きなスズキを逃す)

In the late afternoon I came back to Ikesu, a beautiful and quiet small rocky spot that lies to the east of Etomo Harbor. The water had been very calm and clean yesterday, but today it was even calmer and clearer. Naturally, there was no sarashi (white churning water) as far as the eye could see. I was not trying to catch any specific fish, but I said to myself that at least I could not catch Japanese sea bass today because they love a rough sea. However, to my great surprise, I hooked a big Japanese sea bass at my second cast of a Super Strike Zig Zag.

（今日の午後遅く、私はまたもや、恵曇港の東にある美しくて静かな小さな岩場、生須へ行きました。昨日の海はとても穏やかで透明でしたが、今日は、さらに穏やかで透明なのでした。当然ながらサラシ（かき混ぜられた白い水）はどこにも見当たりません。私は何か特定の魚を狙っているわけではありませんでしたが、少なくとも今日はスズキは釣れないだろうと考えました。荒れた海が大好きな魚だからです。しかし、とても驚いたことに、スーパーストライク・ジグザグの二投目に、大きなスズキがかかってしまいました。）

When the fish jumped out of the water, I lowered my rod, trying to prevent my lure’s barbless hooks from coming off. I got over three vigorous jumps, and the fish was close enough for me to see the whole body of it in the clear water. It was a big fish, and I saw a large part of the rear treble hook of my lure being out of the fish’s mouth. The fish was barely hooked. Now the fish was just a few feet away. I might have reeled the line a bit too hurriedly. The fish shook its head in the water and the tension was lost. The hook finally came out. The beautiful fish briefly stayed there as if trying to understand what had happened, and then disappeared in the water.

（魚が水面からジャンプした時、私は竿を下げて、バーブ（返し）をつぶしてあるルアーの針がはずれないようにしました。力強いジャンプを３回やりすごすと、魚はもう近くに来ていて、澄んだ水の中、私はその全身を見ることができました。大きな魚でした。そして、ルアーの後部に付いている針の大部分が、魚の口の外に出ているのが見えました。魚は、かろうじて針にかかっている状態でした。今や魚は、ほんの眼と鼻の先にいます。私は、ラインを巻くのを少しだけ急ぎ過ぎてしまったのかもしれません。魚が水中で頭を振ると、ラインのテンションが失われました。ついに針がはずれてしまったのです。いったい自分の身に何が起きたのか理解しようとしているような様子で、美しい魚はそこに少し静止し、やがて水の中に消えていきました。）
